Learning Together to Love God
and Love Others
“Of all the commandments, which is the most
important?” “The most important one,” answered
Jesus, “is this: ‘Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God,
the Lord is one. Love the Lord your God with all
your heart and with all your soul and with all your
mind and with all your strength.’ The second is
this: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ There
is no commandment greater than these.”
Mark
12:28b – 31
About this Statement
Mission Statements get a bad rap. Probably because
they’re usually lengthy, vague, and pointless! A proper Mission
Statement, though, is one of purpose and identity—it’s who we are,
every day.
We identified our Mission by asking our people three important
questions:
- What are we passionate about?
- What do we do well?
- What keeps you coming back?
We received many different responses to each
individual question, but we were looking for areas of overlap—were
there any consistent answers throughout each question? What we found
were areas of learning, worship, and fellowship.
This brought to mind Jesus’ elevation of two key commands in the Old
Testament: love God (Deuteronomy 6:5), and love others (Leviticus
19:18). On three occasions Jesus says these are the two most
important commands.1
Other Scripture affirms this as well2. Clearly, they’re important!
From this we cemented our current Mission Statement: Learning
Together to Love God and Love Others. As per the responses we
received, our Learning comes through discipleship in classes and
sermons. We Love God through our worship. And we Love Others through
our care and fellowship.
If this sounds like a Mission you’d like to be a part of, join us on
Sunday!
